Welcome to the web page of Basilica del Sto. Niño. I hope you enjoy exploring the page and discovering the richness of history.

History tells us that the formal Christianization of the Philippine Archipelago was began by the Spanish Augustinian Missionaries under the able leadership of the Fray Andres de Urdaneta in the year 1565 precisely in Cebu. The island of Cebu was their first stronghold where they built churches and established many parishes. However, the motherhouse of all these parishes was the church of Sto . Niño (now Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño). It is the oldest and had become the mater et caput, the fountainhead of all the churches in the Philippines where the Miraculous Image of Sto. Niño is kept enshrined for centuries.

Today, there is an increasing number of pilgrims and devotees of Senior Sto. Niño. Perhaps, the question is - "What draws the people or the devotees to the Basilica?" I would like to propose three reasons. First, is the cross of Magellan, the oldest landmark in the city of Cebu . Second, the Basilica Minore, the center of devotion and the Holy Child of Jesus (the Sto. Niño), the oldest and historical relic in the Philippines .

These three stand as the greatest monuments that speak of the glorious discovery, formation and Christian civilization of the Philippines . In the shrine, people can have their sense of yesteryears as they continue living the present reality of life. In the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu people or devotees gather to remember, to celebrate, what we believe.

I invite you to take a visit to our shrine someday. In the meantime, happy browsing and may the blessing and protection of our Beloved Senior Sto. Niño be with you always as you you continue your journey towards Him.

PIT SEÑOR!
